Jeff Buckley
Allmusic Biography : Since he was the son of cult songwriter Tim Buckley, Jeff Buckley faced more expectations and preconceived notions than most singer/songwriters. Perhaps it wasnt surprising that Jeff Buckleys music was related to his fathers by only the thinnest of margins. Buckleys voice was grand and sweeping, which fit with the mock-operatic grandeur of his Van Morrison-meets-Led Zeppelin music. His audacious debut, Grace, made him one of the most popular alternative artists of the 90s, accentuated by his early and tragic death in 1997, and his cover of Leonard Cohens "Hallelujah" virtually redefined the song for a modern audience.

Buckley began playing while in high school. Eventually, he moved to Los Angeles to study music; while he was there, he performed with several jazz and funk bands, as well as playing with Shinehead, a leader in the dancehall reggae movement. A few years later, he moved to New York, forming Gods & Monsters with the experimental guitarist Gary Lucas. The band became a hip name, yet its lifespan was short. Buckley began a solo career playing clubs and coffee houses, building up a considerable following. Soon, he signed a record deal with Columbia Records, releasing the Live at Sin-e EP in November of 1993. It received good reviews, yet they didnt compare to the raves Buckleys full-length debut, 1994s Grace, received. Unlike the EP, the album was recorded with a full band, which gave the record textures that surprised some of his longtime New York followers. Nevertheless, it made several year-end "Best of 1994" lists and earned him a belated alternative hit, "Last Goodbye," in the spring of 1995.

A long hiatus followed as Buckley worked on material for his follow-up effort, provisionally titled My Sweetheart the Drunk. Originally slated to be produced by Tom Verlaine, who later dropped out of the project, Buckley finally began work on the record in Memphis during the late spring of 1997. On the night of May 29, he and a friend traveled to the local Mud Island Harbor, where Buckley spontaneously decided to go swimming in the Mississippi River and waded into the water fully clothed. A few minutes later, he disappeared under the waves; authorities were quickly contacted, but to no avail -- on June 4, his body was finally found floating near the citys famed Beale Street area. Buckley was 30 years old. A collection of unreleased recordings, Sketches for My Sweetheart the Drunk, appeared in 1998, and two live albums arrived during 2000-2001, Mystery White Boy and Live a lOlympia. Over the next decade and a half, other posthumous records appeared -- the compilation So Real: Songs from Jeff Buckley in 2007, the live album Grace Around the World in 2009 -- but the biggest excavation from the vaults was 2016s You and I, which presented cover versions the singer/songwriter had recorded early in his career.

Grace : Allmusic album Review : Jeff Buckley was many things, but humble wasnt one of them. Grace is an audacious debut album, filled with sweeping choruses, bombastic arrangements, searching lyrics, and above all, the richly textured voice of Buckley himself, which resembled a cross between Robert Plant, Van Morrison, and his father Tim. And thats a fair starting point for his music: Grace sounds like a Led Zeppelin album written by an ambitious folkie with a fondness for lounge jazz. At his best -- the soaring title track, "Last Goodbye," and the mournful "Lover, You Shouldve Come Over" -- Buckleys grasp met his reach with startling results; at its worst, Grace is merely promising.

Sketches for My Sweetheart the Drunk : Allmusic album Review : Jeff Buckley was a mess of contradictions: a perfectionist who believed in spontaneity, a man who was at once humble and vain, a musician who shunned his fathers tumultuous legacy while creating one of his own. These are some of the reasons why he took his time writing and recording the material for his second album, laboring over many songs for months at a time. Given such painstaking methods, it shouldnt have been a surprise that recording was an equally fastidious process. Buckley recorded enough material for an album with producer Tom Verlaine, but deciding that the results werent quite right, he scrapped them and moved to Memphis to record the album again. He reworked a few songs as home demos as he prepared to cut the album, but it was never made -- Buckley died in a tragic drowning accident before entering the studio. As a way to enlarge his legacy, his mother and record label rounded up the majority of the existing unreleased recordings, releasing them as the double-disc set Sketches for My Sweetheart the Drunk. Excepting a few awkward moments and middle-eights, its hard to see why Buckley rejected the Verlaine productions that make up disc one. The material isnt necessarily a progression from Grace; its more like a stripped-down, edgier take on the sweeping, jazz-tinged goth folk-rock that made the first album so distinctive. Neither the nearly finished first disc nor the homemade demos and re-recordings on the second disc offer any revelations, but thats not necessarily a disappointment. Sketches adds several wonderful songs to his catalog, offering further proof of his immense talent. And that, of course, is what makes the album as sad as it is exciting.

Mystery White Boy: Live ’95-’96 : Allmusic album Review : Its hard to judge Jeff Buckleys live collection Mystery White Boy: Live 95-96 without thinking of what might have been, without realizing that he never fulfilled the extent of his potential. If that sounds harsh, its not meant to be -- its more of an acknowledgment of the tragedy of his premature death. After all, Mystery White Boy simply wouldnt exist if Buckley was alive when it was released in the spring of 2000. That wasnt the case with Sketches for My Sweetheart the Drunk, the first posthumous release of his unreleased recordings. Those tapes were the foundation of what would have become his second album; the tapes that formed Mystery White Boy were DAT recordings of his supporting tour for Grace (which the album was named after), many of which werent intended for release at any time. Once Buckley unexpectedly passed away, they became a core part of his legacy, particularly because his concerts were notoriously unpredictable and thrilling, sometimes transcendent (at least according to partisan fans). Mystery White Boy doesnt quite convey that sense of majesty, largely due to the uneven sound quality and the fact that its a compilation, thereby lacking the ebb and flow of a real live show. Buckleys mother Mary Guibert claims in the liner notes that the compilation worked better than any individual concert, and she may well be right, since the album has a consistency that a full concert may not have. Still, its hard not to slightly miss the dramatic rhythm of a real show. Even so, Mystery White Boy is a valuable document, since it does prove that Buckley could transcend time and place with a live show. That might only be of interest to hardcore fans, but theyll still thrill to this, all the same.

Live à L'Olympia : Allmusic album Review : The morbid fascinations, myths, and legends that spring up around the untimely deaths of rock stars were phenomena that Jeff Buckley vehemently detested. In the wake of Buckleys own demise, his mother, Mary Guibert, along with his former bandmembers and fans, worked tirelessly to downplay the hyperbolic press the man and his music have endured. Surprisingly, the most successful move Guibert and company made to this end was to release a pair of incendiary live records, 2000s Mystery White Boy and 2001s import-only Live a lOlympia. Recorded over two nights in July of 1995, the tapes that comprise lOlympia are, even by Buckleys own usually self-deprecating estimate, the finest display of his talent as a consummate performer. His concerts -- and these two were no exception -- were transcendent; blistering, overwhelming, and ecstatic, they bordered on the supernatural. However, he could also croon tender love songs, and was often hilarious -- here he audibly (but lovingly) mimics the great Edith Piaf (keep in mind, hes in front of a French audience) and convincingly speeds through a truncated cover of Led Zeppelins "Kashmir" at a simulated 45 rpm. Though the album was mastered from a soundboard cassette, the sound quality is excellent, making it relatively easy to overlook minor problems with fidelity, especially when considering the performance itself. Buckley and his band revel in the wild adoration of their fans (something they hadnt experienced prior to the Olympia gigs), and eventually reduce the crowd to a hushed, awe-inspired mass, more a congregation than an audience. Lest you balk at the import price tag the album carries, know that Buckleys live shows were the lifeblood of his music. On Live a lOlympia, songs from his sole studio LP, Grace, as well as unreleased tracks and cover tunes, become entirely different entities, exploding and writhing with unrestrained passion, then calming in a solemn but reverential display of love and respect. In the end, lOlympia is the best proof that Jeff Buckleys greatest legacy is his lust for life, dynamic personality, and -- above all -- his music.

Songs to No One 1991-1992 : Allmusic album Review : If Jeff Buckley hadnt have taken that fateful swim one late spring night in 1997, its a fair guess that every single Buckley release besides Live at Sin-E and "Grace" would have never seen the light of day. And this has never been more apparent than with the 2002 release, Songs To No One 1991-1992, an 11- track compilation of live soundboard recordings, radio broadcasts, and demos. Included here are two early versions of Buckley classics, "Mojo Pin" and "Grace," co-written with ex-Captain Beefheart guitarist Gary Lucas; "Mojo Pin" shows up as both a demo and a live version. Few of the other tracks on Songs To No One 1991-1992 are worthy of release. Exceptions include covers of "Hymne a lAmour" (an 11-minute long album opener), and the lovely "Satisfied Mind" (a song that was played at Buckleys funeral). But the majority of the selections really never should have been released, especially the hard rockin throwaway "Cruel," and the meandering "How Long Will It Take" (a fitting title). Another reason why Songs To No One 1991-1992 should be skipped over is due to the fact that a few overdubs were later added to the tracks, obviously without Buckleys input or consent (which brings to mind such now written-off posthumous Jimi Hendrix releases as Crash Landing). In a Rolling Stone news clip about the albums impending release in August of 2002, Buckleys mother admitted that the late singer/songwriter had put a note on top of a tape of this work that read Disgusto Garbage. Nuff said.

The Grace EPs : Allmusic album Review : For someone who only put out one full-length album during his lifetime, Jeff Buckley managed to leave quite a trail of other material that came out on so many other singles, EPs, and posthumous releases that only the most dedicated fan could keep track of them. This collection of five 1994-1996 EPs, packaged as five separate CDs (each with their own sleeve) in one case, doesnt quite pick up all the stray ends that dont appear on his other full-length releases. But it does contain five EPs that use his Grace album as the nominal touchstone, all of which are now collectable and sought-after as listeners strive for every scrap of Buckleys legacy. Indeed two of these (Peyote Radio Theatre and So Real, aka Live at Nighttown) were promotional-only releases that werent commercially available. The others were imports: Last Goodbye came out in Japan, Live From the Bataclan in France, and The Grace EP in Australia. For collectors its quite useful, and not skimpy (adding up to more than two hours even though there are just three to five songs on each disc), with liner notes from musicians in Buckleys band and Buckleys mother some icing on the cake. What of the music? Its kind of a supplement to the Grace album, as it contains live versions (sometimes more than one) of five songs from that record, as well as a few edit versions, a "Nag Champa Mix" of "Dream Brother," and a 13-minute live "Chocolate Version" of "Mojo Pin." These all do what live versions often do: give the artist a chance to stretch out and indulge a bit, something probably welcomed by an overwrought singer such as Buckley. Perhaps more interesting to collectors will be a few cover tunes not on Grace: a whopping 12-minute version of Van Morrisons "The Way Young Lovers Do," a medley of "Je NEn Connais Pas la Fin/Hymne A lAmour," Hank Williamss "Lost Highway," and a too-extended 14-minute take on Alex Chiltons "Kanga-Roo." And there is, finally, a bonus track added to the The Grace EP (the only song in the package not on the original EPs), "Tongue," a spooky ambient 11-minute studio instrumental. Although this release is good value, be aware that of the 19 tracks, one is the exact same version of "Mojo Pin" that appears on the Grace album; two are simply edits of the Grace versions of "Grace" and "Last Goodbye"; and the exact same version of "Kanga-Roo" is used on the Peyote Radio Theatre and Last Goodbye discs.

So Real: Songs From Jeff Buckley : Allmusic album Review : Because Jeff Buckley died after having only released one official studio album -- and a fantastic one at that -- fans and friends were unfortunately left to wonder what could have been instead of being able to see it first hand. Fortunately, Buckley had other recorded evidence of his immense talent besides the ten songs on Grace. He was a live performer as much, if not more, as he was a studio musician, and his Monday-night residence at New Yorks now-defunct Sin-é in the early 90s lent itself to an EP and an extended two-CD set, and other bits of shows were captured on the various other releases that peppered record shelves after the singers untimely departure. The closest thing we got to a second album was 1998s Sketches for My Sweetheart the Drunk, which, as the title indicates, was not necessarily a complete work, though most of the songs in themselves are finished-sounding and exciting enough to be interesting. What this means, of course, is that theres more than enough material to compile a "greatest-hits" collection, which is, in essence, what the Mary Guibert- (Buckleys mother) and Tom Burleigh-compiled So Real: Songs from Jeff Buckley is. Unfortunately, it also claims to be a little more than that, with exclusive tracks and pictures not heard or seen elsewhere. In reality, most of the 14-song record is taken from Grace, specifically the 2004 Legacy edition, which had included a bonus track, "Forget Her," as well as alternate versions of songs like "Dream Brother" and "Eternal Life" -- the latter of which has hard-edged electric guitars that reflect the grunge that was happening contemporarily -- and Buckleys arguably two "biggest" songs, "Last Goodbye" and the fragile cover of Leonard Cohens "Hallelujah." The Sin-è sessions are also given a brief nod, with live cuts of Edith Piafs "Je Nen Connais Pas La Fin" and the lovely "Mojo Pin," as is Sketches ("Everybody Here Wants You" and "The Sky Is a Landfill"). The biggest attractions then, for fans who already own these albums, are the two previously unreleased cuts: the live acoustic version on "So Real" and live in-studio cover of the Smiths haunting "I Know Its Over," on which Buckley manages to conjure up the presence of Moz while still making it very much his own. Both of these should be of no surprise to a serious fan -- "I Know Its Over" is even attached to the end of "Hallelujah" on the live album Mystery White Boy -- but it is nice to have all these tracks together at once. This is Buckley at his strongest and most affecting, and while Grace itself probably acts as the best introduction to the late musician, So Real: Songs from Jeff Buckley, still offers a good, honest portrayal of everything he was and all that he had.

Grace Around the World : Allmusic album Review : Jeff Buckley didnt leave behind an extensive body of work: a live EP; his debut LP, Grace; a handful of B-sides; plus an unfinished album. After his untimely death, all this material has seen reissue in some form -- a deluxe version of the debut, a posthumous collection of the incomplete sophomore album -- which meant the only things still left in the vault were more live performances, specifically the ones he gave for TV stations across the globe. Sony/Legacys 2009 set Grace Around the World rounds up the bulk of these performances and offers them as a CD/DVD set, with the CD offering 12 of the 14 performances on the DVD (a "Last Goodbye" from a January 1995 session for MTVs 120 Minutes and "Vancouver" from the U.K. MTVs Most Wanted from two months later being the tunes left behind). The DVD also has a music video of "Hallelujah," a VH1 Behind the Scenes "Star Tours," and an interview, making this a clearinghouse of most of the existing broadcast footage of Buckley from the first months of 1995, something that by its very definition is designed for diehards, the diehards who will also appreciate the addition of the very good hourlong documentary Amazing Grace on the one-CD/two-DVD deluxe version of Grace Around the World, especially as it focuses on his music more than his myth. The same could be said of this set at large: it captures him as a working musician, pushing his first album hard, trying to get his name and music known, not caring about anything outside of the moment -- all things that offer a potent, stirring reminder of Buckleys power and grace.

Playlist: The Very Best of Jeff Buckley : Allmusic album Review : Though he only left behind a small body of work after his passing in 1997, Jeff Buckleys discography has its choicest morsels collected on Playlist: The Very Best of Jeff Buckley. Though most of the material is pulled from Grace, his landmark full-length debut, deeper cuts like his cover of Van Morrisons "The Way Young Lovers Do" and "Everybody Here Wants You" (from the unfinished Sketches for My Sweetheart the Drunk) give a taste of the gems that can be found on some of the singers live albums and unfinished EPs. For someone looking to dive into Buckleys catalog, a better idea might be to just dive into Grace or the live album Mystery White Boy, but if youre looking for more of a career retrospective, The Very Best of Jeff Buckley wont let you down.

You and I : Allmusic album Review : Jeff Buckley recorded the ten tracks that comprise the 2016 compilation You and I in February 1993, roughly four months after he signed to Columbia Records. Hed start recording Grace, his lone completed studio album, with producer Andy Wallace a few months after he laid down these sketches, but despite containing a solo demo of "Grace," the closest connection to the music on You and I is the coffeehouse crooner showcased on Live at Sin-e, the EP released as a teaser toward the conclusion of 1993. Like that EP and its accompanying 2003 expansion, You and I relies on covers delivered by Buckley, accompanied by nothing more than his electric guitar, strummed as if it were an acoustic. Much of the repertoire showcased on this album will be familiar to any Gen-Xer who attended college during the height of alternative rock: classic rock numbers intertwined with the Smiths and standards, and tunes chosen to telegraph the singers influences while also providing context for the originals. Occasionally, theres a slight surprise -- Buckley attempts Bukka Whites Delta stomp on a slippery, slurred version of "Poor Boy Long Way from Home" -- but usually, You and I feels of a piece with the rest of his early work: he zeroes in on both the funk and spectral qualities of Zeppelin, he elongates Bob Dylan, plays "Dont Let the Sun Catch You Cryin" relatively straight, and he finds his heart in Morrissey & Marr, drawing equally from the heartbreak and jangle. All these tunes may have been composed by other writers, but in Buckleys hands they seem to belong to him, which is the highest compliment that can ever be paid to a vocalist.
