Blondie
Allmusic Biography : Embracing a broad range of pop music that encompassed British Invasion rock, garage rock, disco, reggae, Latin rhythms, and hip-hop, Blondie was the most commercially successful band to emerge from the New York punk/new wave community of the late 70s. The group was formed in New York City in August 1974 by singer Deborah Harry (b. July 1, 1945, Miami, Florida), formerly of the folk-pop group Wind in the Willows, and guitarist Chris Stein (b. January 5, 1950, Brooklyn, New York) out of the remnants of Harrys previous group, the Stilettos. The lineup fluctuated over the next year; drummer Clement Burke (b. November 24, 1955, New York) joined in May 1975, and bassist Gary Valentine signed on in August, while keyboard player James Destri (b. April 13, 1954) came on board in October, completing the initial permanent lineup. One of the first bands on the CBGB scene to score a record deal, Blondie released their first album, Blondie, on Private Stock Records in December 1976. In July 1977, Valentine was replaced by Frank Infante.

In August 1977, Chrysalis Records bought Blondies contract from Private Stock and in October released their second album, Plastic Letters. (Chrysalis also reissued the debut LP.) Blondie expanded to a sextet in November with the addition of bassist Nigel Harrison (born in Princes Risborough, Buckinghamshire, England), as Infante switched to guitar. Blondie broke commercially in the U.K. in March 1978, when their cover of Randy & the Rainbows 1963 hit "Denise," renamed "Denis," became a Top Ten hit, as did Plastic Letters, followed by a second U.K. Top Ten, "(Im Always Touched by Your) Presence, Dear." Blondie turned to U.K. producer/songwriter Mike Chapman for their third album, Parallel Lines, which was released in September 1978 and eventually broke them worldwide. "Picture This" became a U.K. Top 40 hit, and "Hanging on the Telephone" made the U.K. Top Ten, but it was the albums third single, the disco-influenced "Heart of Glass," that took Blondie to number one in both the U.K. and the U.S. "Sunday Girl" hit number one in the U.K. in May, and "One Way or Another" hit the U.S. Top 40 in August. Blondie followed with their fourth album, Eat to the Beat, in October. Its first single, "Dreaming," went Top Ten in the U.K., Top 40 in the U.S. The second U.K. single, "Union City Blue," went Top 40. In March 1980, the third U.K. single from Eat to the Beat, "Atomic," became the groups third British number one. (It later made the U.S. Top 40.)

Meanwhile, Harry was collaborating with German disco producer Giorgio Moroder on "Call Me," the theme from the movie American Gigolo. It became Blondies second transatlantic chart-topper. Blondies fifth album, Autoamerican, was released in November 1980, and its first single was the reggae-ish tune "The Tide Is High," which went to number one in the U.S. and U.K. The second single was the rap-oriented "Rapture," which topped the U.S. pop charts and went Top Ten in the U.K. But the bands eclectic style reflected a diminished participation by its members: Infante sued, charging that he wasnt being used on the records, though he settled and stayed in the lineup. In 1981, the members of Blondie worked on individual projects, notably Harrys gold-selling solo album, KooKoo. The Best of Blondie was released in the fall of the year. The Hunter, Blondies sixth album, was released in May 1982, preceded by the single "Island of Lost Souls," a Top 40 hit in the U.S. and U.K. "War Child" also became a Top 40 hit in the U.K., but The Hunter was a commercial disappointment, as was the concert tour that followed.

By the time The Hunter was completed, Stein became seriously ill with the genetic disease pemphigus. As a result, Blondie quietly broke up in October 1982, with Debbie Harry launching a part-time solo career while caring for Stein, who eventually recovered. In 1998, a new Blondie lineup anchored by Harry, Stein, Destri, and Burke united to tour Europe, their first series of dates in 16 years; a new LP, No Exit, followed early the next year. After more touring, another studio set, The Curse of Blondie, followed in 2003, and a DVD of the Live by Request program from A&E; was released in 2004. In 2006, Blondie celebrated their 30th anniversary with their induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and the release of Greatest Hits: Sound & Vision, a best-of collection that contained all their classic videos as well. Blondie got back to work on original material in October 2009, decamping to upstate New York to start recording a new studio album. Additional sessions were held in Hoboken, and the resulting Panic of Girls was released in July 2011. In 2013, Blondie set out on a concert tour with another iconic female-fronted band, X, and returned to the recording studio to work on a new studio set, which was released in 2014 as Ghosts of Download. Three years later, Blondie teamed with producer John Congleton for Pollinator, which featured songs and cameos from the likes of Charli XCX, Nick Valensi of the Strokes, Sia Fuller, Blood Orange, Dave Sitek, and Johnny Marr.

10 Great Songs : Allmusic album Review : Like most budget-priced Blondie collections, the creatively titled compilation 10 Great Songs covers just enough of the big hits to lure casual listeners in, but not enough to keep longtime fans interested. Folks looking for a better overview of the iconic new wave/pop outfit would be better off with 2002’s Greatest Hits: Sound & Vision or 1999’s Complete Picture: Very Best of Blondie.

Plastic Letters : Allmusic album Review : In artistic terms, Plastic Letters, Blondies second album, was a classic example of the sophomore slump. If their debut, Blondie, was a precise update of the early-60s girl group sound, delivered with an ironic, 70s sensibility, its follow-up seemed to consist of leftovers, the songwriting never emerging from obscurity and pedestrian musical tracks. The production (again courtesy of Richard Gottehrer) was once again bright and sharp, but in the service of inferior material it alone couldnt save the collection. The two exceptions to the general mediocrity were "Denis," a revival of Randy & the Rainbows 1963 hit "Denise," for which Deborah Harry sang a verse in French to justify the name and gender change, and "(Im Always Touched by Your) Presence, Dear," written by Gary Valentine, who had left Blondie shortly before the recording of the album. Due to these two songs, the album became a commercial success, at least overseas. British-based Chrysalis Records had bought out Private Stock, giving Blondie greater distribution and more of an international marketing focus. The result was that "Denis" broke them in Europe, nearly topping the U.K. charts and followed into the Top Ten by "(Im Always Touched by Your) Presence, Dear," with the album also peaking in the Top Ten. In the U.S., Blondie finally charted, making the Top 100. The songwriting problem did not seem to bode well, but they would take a distinctly different approach next time out.

Parallel Lines : Allmusic album Review : Blondie turned to British pop producer Mike Chapman for their third album, on which they abandoned any pretensions to new wave legitimacy (just in time, given the decline of the new wave) and emerged as a pure pop band. But it wasnt just Chapman that made Parallel Lines Blondies best album; it was the bands own songwriting, including Deborah Harry, Chris Stein, and James Destris "Picture This," and Harry and Steins "Heart of Glass," and Harry and new bass player Nigel Harrisons "One Way or Another," plus two contributions from nonbandmember Jack Lee, "Will Anything Happen?" and "Hanging on the Telephone." That was enough to give Blondie a number one on both sides of the Atlantic with "Heart of Glass" and three more U.K. hits, but what impresses is the albums depth and consistency -- album tracks like "Fade Away and Radiate" and "Just Go Away" are as impressive as the songs pulled for singles. The result is state-of-the-art pop/rock circa 1978, with Harrys tough-girl glamour setting the pattern that would be exploited over the next decade by a host of successors led by Madonna.

Eat to the Beat : Allmusic album Review : Just as Blondies second album, Plastic Letters, was a pale imitation of their self-titled debut, Eat to the Beat, their fourth album, was a secondhand version of their breakthrough third album, Parallel Lines: one step forward, half a step back. There was an attempt, on such songs as "The Hardest Part" and "Atomic," to recreate the rock/disco fusion of the groups one major U.S. hit, "Heart of Glass," without similar success, and, elsewhere, the band just tried to cover too many stylistic bases. "Die Young Stay Pretty," for example, dipped into an island sound complete with modified reggae beat (a foreshadowing of the upcoming hit "The Tide Is High"), and "Sound-a-Sleep" was a lullaby that dragged too much to be a good change of pace. The British, who had long since been converted, made Eat to the Beat another chart-topper, with three major hits, including a number one ranking for "Atomic" and almost the same success for "Dreaming," but in the U.S., which still saw Blondie as a slightly comic one-hit wonder, the album was greeted for what it was -- slick corporate rock without the tangy flavor that had made Parallel Lines such ear candy.

Autoamerican : Allmusic album Review : The basic Blondie sextet was augmented, or replaced, by numerous session musicians (including lots of uncredited horn and string players) for the groups fifth album, Autoamerican, on which they continued to expand their stylistic range, with greater success, at least on certain tracks, than they had on Eat to the Beat. A cover of Jamaican group the Paragons "The Tide Is High," released in advance of the album, became a gold-selling number one single, as did the rap pastiche "Rapture," but, despite their presence, the album stalled in the lower half of the Top Ten and spent fewer weeks in the charts than either of its predecessors. One reason for that, admittedly, was that Chrysalis Records pulled promotion of the disc in favor of pushing lead singer Debbie Harrys debut solo album, KooKoo, not even bothering to release a third single after scoring two chart-topping hits. But then, its hard to imagine what that third single could have been on an album that leads off with a pretentious string-filled instrumental ("Europa"), and also finds Harry crooning ersatz 20s pop on "Heres Looking at You" and tackling Broadway show music in a cover of "Follow Me" from Camelot. Though more characteristic, the rest of the tracks are weak compositions indifferently executed. Thus Autoamerican was memorable only for its hits, which would be better heard when placed on a hits compilation.

The Hunter : Allmusic album Review : Autoamerican was Blondies last real album (until their 1999 reunion with No Exit), after which the band collapsed in legal problems and solo aspirations. The Hunter was only made because they still owed Chrysalis an album on their contract, and it sounds like the obligatory record it was. "Island of Lost Souls" (the albums only U.S. singles chart entry and, in fact, the only song released as a single in the U.S.) was a try at remaking "The Tide Is High," while "The Beast" tried to re-create at least the rap section of "Rapture." "War Child," which made the U.K. Top 40, was a dance rock effort in the style of "Call Me," and one of two somewhat autobiographical Debbie Harry lyrics, along with "English Boys." (Harry wrote all the albums words except for those to keyboard player Jimmy Destris "Danceway" and the cover of the Marvelettes 1967 hit "The Hunter Gets Captured by the Game," which was written by Smokey Robinson.) "For Your Eyes Only" had been intended as the theme song for the 1981 James Bond film, but rejected (rightly) in favor of a competing entry by Bill Conti and Mike Leeson that went on to become a Top Five hit for Sheena Easton. The rest of the material was equally second-rate, consisting of funk-rock tracks with the barest of melodies, and lyrics that ranged from impenetrable ("Orchid Club") to incoherent (the science fiction epic "Dragonfly," which alternated recited and sung sections having something to do with a spaceship race). Blondie was always a band with ideas -- musical, lyrical, and visual -- but The Hunter found them running short conceptually as well practically. It was a disappointing end.

Once More Into the Bleach : Allmusic album Review : Though Debbie Harry has generally worked in a pop/rock vein, shes had her share of exposure in dance clubs thanks to hits like "Heart of Glass," "Rapture," and the Chic-produced "Backfired." In 1988 -- a few years after she had left Chrysalis -- the label set out to exploit her club/dance appeal with Once More Into the Bleach, a generally decent, though not exceptional, collection of remixes. Those singles were obvious choices for this CD, which ranges from Blondie classics (including "Call Me," "Sunday Girl," and "The Tide Is High") to such solo material as "Feel the Spin" and the humorous "French Kissin in the USA." The most interesting remixes here include a house-influenced version of "Backfired," and a Europop recasting of "Denis." But despite its strong points, Bleach is a collection that only the more devoted Blondie/Harry fanatics and club/dance DJs should look into. Those checking her out for the first time would be much better off with 1976s Blondie or 1978s Parallel Lines.

The Complete Picture: The Very Best of Deborah Harry and Blondie : Allmusic album Review : This import CD is one of the best Blondie and Debbie Harry compilations for original music, unless one is looking for remixes and rarities. The 20-track disc covers the years 1977-1990, and includes "Heart of Glass," "Call Me," "French Kissin in the U.S.A.," "Rapture," "Atomic," "The Tide Is High," and others. Very solid song selection (and track order). First released in 1993, the current version has superior sound quality. Casual fans will most likely choose Best of Blondie [Chrysalis], as it only has the best of Blondie. But some of Debbie Harrys songs will please the casual fan, so Complete Picture may be a better alternative than the more expensive Platinum Collection for the adventurous shopper.

Blonde and Beyond : Allmusic album Review : Most new wave bands tended to have short flashes of brilliance. Not Blondie. They were a great singles band, but they werent limited to that -- they also made strong albums and, as the rarities collection Blonde and Beyond illustrates, they had a lot of terrific material that never made it on the official records. Like most odds-and-ends collections, Blonde and Beyond is a little scattershot, which is only appropriate for a compilation comprised of demos, B-sides, live tracks, and foreign-language versions of familiar hits. Still, the treasures make the digging worthwhile, since the keepers here -- including early versions of "Denis" and "X Offender," "Poets Problem," "Underground Girl," and a live version of "Bang a Gong (Get It On)" -- and rank among the groups very best efforts and are certainly worth the time of any true fan.

The Platinum Collection : Allmusic album Review : The Platinum Collection reigns as Blondies finest compilation, outshining The Best of Blondie in overall quality and quantity. This fine retrospective covers every U.S. and U.K. A- and B-side on two discs while adding unreleased material and club remixes as bonuses at the finale. Opening with the poppy, yet venomous, first U.K. single, "X Offender," disc one reveals Blondies liveliest and most ambitious efforts as they merge their punk, reggae, and roots rock influences into what would soon be considered new wave. While Blondie is generally known for their charting singles, the spectacular B-sides/album tracks, including the dazzling space rocker "Fade Away and Radiate" and the punk/synth pop hybrid "Contact in Red Square," are equally essential. Disc two recalls some of the bands most accessible singles including "The Tide Is High," "Call Me," and "Rapture," which became the first Top Ten single to contain a rap vocal. Despite the excellent material represented so far, the second half unfortunately fails to sustain the momentum. Marked by selections from Blondies 1982 swan song The Hunter, four 1975 demos, and two 1994 remixes, the rest of the disc suffers from poor sequencing and inferior selections. The terrible, unnecessary remixes of "Atomic" and "Rapture" and ho-hum demos would only appeal to collectors. Nonetheless, the demo "Once I Had a Love" would eventually receive a disco makeover and evolve into the international chart-topper "Heart of Glass" three years later. Ultimately, fans may prefer the distinguished single edits for "Heart of Glass" and "The Tide Is High" over the album versions, and yet despite all revealed shortcomings, The Platinum Collection provides more music per dollar spent compared to other Blondie releases. In addition, the compilations colorful liner notes include insightful song commentary by most of Blondie, single and album information, and a descriptive family tree.

Denis : Allmusic album Review : Hardly the definitive compilation the title claims it to be, The Essential Collection is a bungled mess, containing only a handful of big hits ("Hanging on the Telephone," "Denis") among its 14 tracks, and overlooking classics like "Heart of Glass" in favor of latter-day album tracks. Which, of course, means that it is practically of no use to any listener, since it satisfies the needs of neither casual fans nor diehards.

Blondie : Allmusic album Review : If new wave was about reconfiguring and recontextualizing simple pop/rock forms of the 50s and 60s in new, ironic, and aggressive ways, then Blondie, which took the girl group style of the early and mid-60s and added a 70s archness, fit right in. True punksters may have deplored the group early on (they never had the hip cachet of Talking Heads or even the Ramones), but Blondies secret weapon, which was deployed increasingly over their career, was a canny pop straddle -- they sent the music up and celebrated it at the same time. So, for instance, songs like "X Offender" (their first single) and "In the Flesh" (their first hit, in Australia) had the tough-girl-with-a-tender-heart tone of the Shangri-Las (the disc was produced by Richard Gottehrer, who had handled the Angels ["My Boyfriends Back"] among others, and Brill Building songwriter Ellie Greenwich even sang backup on "In the Flesh"), while going one step too far into hard-edged decadence -- that is, if you chose to see that. (The tag line of "Look Good in Blue," for example, went, "I could give you some head and shoulders to lie on.") The whole point was that you could take Blondie either way, and lead singer Deborah Harrys vocals, which combined rock fervor with a kiss-off quality, reinforced that, as did the bands energetic, trashy sound. This album, released on independent label Private Sound, was not a major hit, but it provided a template for the future.

Atomic: The Very Best of Blondie : Allmusic album Review : Atomic: The Very Best of Blondie is a two-disc compilation with a spotty best-of on one disc and a collection of remixes on another. Disc one is a satisfactory overview, containing most of the groups biggest and best hits -- "Atomic," "Heart of Glass," "Rapture," "Hanging on the Telephone," "Rip Her to Shreds," "Tide Is High" -- but several other Blondie compilations do a better job, and they dont come with a disc of remixes that arent of any interest to casual fans. Some of the remixes are alright, though none of them are worth hearing a second time (and who, besides a DJ, needs four remixes of "Atomic 98"?).

The Best of Blondie : Allmusic album Review : Although Blondie made several first-rate albums, most of their best songs were released as singles, which makes The Best of Blondie an essential collection. The Best of Blondie glosses over their punk roots -- very little from the first album, apart from the vicious "Rip Her to Shreds" and the seductive "In the Flesh" -- but the bands pop hits are among the finest of their era and encapsulate all of the virtues of new wave. Apart from genuine chart hits like "Heart of Glass," "One Way or Another," "Dreaming," "Call Me," "Atomic," "The Tide Is High," and "Rapture," Best of Blondie picks up several of the groups best album tracks, like "(Im Always Touched by Your) Presence, Dear" and "Hanging on the Telephone." The Best of Blondie isnt all you need to know, but it is an excellent introduction to one of the best new wave bands.

No Exit : Allmusic album Review : Once youve cherished Blondie you never really go back, even if for half of your life you must cherish them out of forgiveness, or just plain heartfelt concern. Debbie Harry loves to make curious decisions about her music, and its always important to listen to her work carefully and several times (while trying to keep her performance in John Waters Hairspray either firmly in, or out, of your mind as you do). In the old days, Harry and her guys covered terrific old blues and trippy, backwater pieces, popped up and pretty, punkified, otherwise unremarkable rock tunes, and flat out treated us to a show, whether live or Memorex. No Exit is a gritty downtown incarnation that almost sounds like a cutting room castaway, filled with raw and abject moments and digressions that suggest an improvised, irrelevant feel. The talkative "Screaming Skin" is a lyrically confused, stream of consciousness piece that sounds as if it was written on a paper bag on the subway -- and some people really like this stuff. But some of the instrumental tracks have the veneer of an afterthought, particularly in the percussion department. Miss Debbie is always at her rockin finest when futzing with the blues (and country, really), which she does on most of the latter half of the disc like the consummate, crazy pro that she is. If nothing else, No Exit is a testament to authentic rock and roll durability, and, well, the abiding "wow" that is Debbie Harry.

Greatest Hits : Allmusic album Review : If you consulted a Blondie discography in the fall of 2002, you would see a slew of compilations listed, and you might wonder why a new Greatest Hits was needed. But a closer examination would reveal that there really is a niche into which such a collection would fall: that of a full-priced, single-disc, CD-era hits compilation covering the bands entire career. Although still in print, The Best of Blondie is a 12-track release from the LP era, first issued back in 1981 in between Blondies fifth and sixth regular albums. 1988s Once More Into the Bleach combines Blondie and Debbie Harry solo tracks. 1993s Blonde & Beyond is a rarities set. 1994s The Platinum Collection fills two CDs and is thus pricey. 1995s The Remix Project contains remixes. There have also been short, discount-priced collections and overseas compilations, but the niche remains -- and Greatest Hits fills it. It contains among its 19 tracks all ten of the bands U.S. chart singles as well as their major U.K. hits that did not chart in America. "X Offender," Blondies 1976 debut single, is included, and so is "Maria," their 1999 comeback hit. By sequencing the album out of chronological order, the compilers emphasize the bands eclecticism. You dont get to hear Blondies evolution from their early bubblegum punk style into the efficient power pop of the Mike Chapman productions and on into ersatz disco, rap, and Caribbean music; everything is all mixed up. The tropical 1980-1981 hit "The Tide Is High," for example, is followed by the belligerent "X Offender" from four years earlier, and the tough-talking "Rip Her to Shreds" gives way to the early hip-hop of "Rapture." Chronological order would have been better, but the hits are all here.

The Curse of Blondie : Allmusic album Review : No Exit was a textbook example of everything a reunion album shouldnt be -- sloppily written, dominated by embarrassing attempts to sound current (especially the Coolio [!] duet in the metallic title track), and calculatedly commercial. So its no surprise that when Blondie decided to try again five years later -- when Debbie Harry was actually old enough to be a Golden Girl, few were paying attention and The Curse of Blondie didnt even get a U.S. release. But whats shocking is that this, and not No Exit, is what shouldve been Blondies big comeback effort. That isnt to say that The Curse of Blondie is a classic Blondie disc, but its the first good one since at least Autoamerican, and features one of their best-ever singles in "Good Boys." "Good Boys" is prime Blondie the way they should be -- pulsing layers of synthesizers are punctuated by sharp guitar riffs and the whole prize is dressed up in an infectious hook thats one part bubblegum, one part sexy chanteuse. Disco pioneer Giorgio Moroder even mixed the single version, and this alone is a sign that the band is again aware of its strengths and choosing the right collaborators, unlike the turn with Coolio the last time around. The rest of the album doesnt quite live up to the promise of that single, but unlike No Exit, its largely not embarrassing (opening track "Shakedown" aside -- no one needs to hear Debbie Harry rap the lines "I think Id have a better chance to see the Pope/I got so bored with his schtick and waving a dick/and all his high and mighty sh*t/Im a witch"). All 14 songs are dressed up in Steve Thompsons chic, modern production -- while the album sounds contemporary, it also sounds like classic Blondie. Perhaps this had something to do with the cultural shift that took place between this and the last album -- in 1998/1999, rap-metal, trance, and bubblegum pop ruled the charts and all three clumsily found their way onto No Exit. But by 2003, bands like the Sounds and the Rapture were getting big doing virtually the exact same thing that Blondie had done 25 years earlier, and that set the stage for them to release this, their best album in well over 20 years. That doesnt mean The Curse of Blondie is great -- after all, both No Exit and The Hunter were awful -- and without a widespread release even fewer are likely to hear this. But those who do will probably be pleased to find that Blondie still have some life left.

Singles Box : Allmusic album Review : This Singles Box from EMI collects all of Blondies 7" and 12" singles on individual compact discs adorned with the original vinyl artwork. For the ardent fan or collector, this box is a "must have," as its stocked with remastered versions of both classic cuts and unreleased B-sides, as well as previously unavailable remixes like the extended version of "Call Me," which appeared on the soundtrack for 1980s American Gigolo. Casual fans just looking for the hits would be better off with any of the myriad single-disc "greatest-hits" collections available, but true fanatics will eat this up, despite the glaring omission of any version of "One Way or Another."

Greatest Hits: Sound & Vision : Allmusic album Review : If you consulted a Blondie discography in the fall of 2002, you would see a slew of compilations listed, and you might wonder why a new Greatest Hits was needed.

Original Album Classics : Allmusic album Review : The 2011 box set rounds up Blondies three latter-day comeback albums: No Exit, Livid, and The Curse of Blondie. This may not be Blondies prime, but they had a strong comeback, and this is a good, wallet-friendly way to hear it all at once.

Panic of Girls : Allmusic album Review : Delivered eight years after the reunited Blondie’s second effort, 2003’s The Curse of Blondie, 2011’s Panic of Girls rushes forth on a sleek new wave disco pulse that’s entirely unconcerned about whether ‘80s retro is in style this season or not. This is fashionable music existing outside the realm of fashion, Blondie updating their classic styles -- disco-rock, reggae-fied pop, garage bubblegum -- just enough to modernize yet not enough to be unrecognizable. Certainly, Blondie bear some signs of their age -- Debbie Harry’s voice may sound a little rough around the edges but the band also has the casual professionalism that comes from decades of play -- but this is not a nostalgia trip, something that’s evident from the new millennium paranoia of its opener, “D-Day.” Modern topics collide with contemporary sounds and if not everything here is convincing -- notably, the Parisian kitsch of “Le Bleu” strikes a discordant note -- the band’s cosmopolitan cool remains attractive.

Greatest Hits: Deluxe Redux / Ghosts Of Download : Allmusic album Review : While its an inarguably good thing that Blondie is still extant in the 21st century, the bands 2014 release Blondie 4(0)-Ever suggests the predicaments imposed by the bands past and present as they acknowledge their 40th anniversary. Blondie 4(0)-Ever bundles together two albums, a collection of new material called Ghosts of Download, and Greatest Hits Deluxe Redux, a re-recorded set of Blondie favorites. While 2011s Panic of Girls suggested that Blondie was striving to make a place in their new music for all of their many influences, Ghosts of Download is an album clearly made with the dancefloor in mind; electronic beats and gleaming synthesized melodies dominate the tunes, and while all members of the current lineup are listed in the credits, except for the vocals and some very occasional guitar lines from Chris Stein, just about everything here appears to have come from a keyboard or a computer program. Ghosts of Download lacks the wit and adventure of Blondies best moments, and the presence of the numerous guest stars on these sessions (including Beth Ditto of the Gossip and Latin EDM artists Systema Solar) suggest Stein and Deborah Harry struggled to find their own voice within this material, which ignores pop and rock in favor of dance-influenced sounds without the playful downtown cheek of "Heart of Glass" or "Rapture." As for Harry, her vocals are cool, stylish, and well-controlled, but theres a lack of fire or dynamics in her performances that suggests shes chosen a deliberately narrow range as time takes its inevitable toll on her voice (she was 68 years old when she cut these sessions, and while she sounds quite good for her age, shes clearly not the singer she once was). And was anyone really waiting for Blondie to cover Frankie Goes to Hollywood, especially with such a disinterested tone? On disc two, Greatest Hits Deluxe Redux contains newly re-recorded versions of 11 of their better-known sides, and like most examples of an artist re-doing their hits, these performances fall significantly short in a side by side comparison with the originals, though this is livelier than the Ghosts of Download sessions and features the full band playing with professionalism and a certain elan (Clem Burkes drumming is as crisp and forceful as ever). Harrys vocals are more pleasing here as well; while her range is still narrower than in her prime, she cheats the missing notes more gracefully, perhaps because shes been doing it on-stage for some time now. But one would imagine that anyone who is enough of a fan to buy Blondies 10th studio album in the year 2014 would already own these 11 songs in their original form, and Greatest Hits Deluxe Redux adds little value to this package, nice as it is to hear some of these tunes again.

Pollinator : Allmusic album Review : As the third new Blondie album of the 2010s, Pollinator falls into something of a familiar pattern. Ever since 2011s Panic of Girls, the revived Blondie have been determined to fit within the confines of contemporary music, riding the remnants of the new wave revival and emphasizing electronics. Unlike Ghosts of Download, which was buried as a second disc with a collection of re-recordings of greatest hits in 2014, Pollinator pushes splashy guest stars. Blood Orange co-writes "Long Time" with Debbie Harry, Joan Jett guests on the opener "Doom or Destiny," Strokes guitarist Nick Valensi appears on "Best Day Ever," which he co-wrote with Sia Furler, and the group cover both Johnny Marr ("My Monster") and Charli XCX ("Gravity"). Thats a lot of cooks, so its not entirely a surprise that Pollinator can sometimes seem overheated, only settling into a simmer on "When I Gave Up on You" (which also features a guest in the form of the Gregory Brothers). That said, the sheets of synths and sly nods to the groups disco-punk past dont seem desperate, no matter how aggressive the production is. Theres almost a charm in the way Blondie push so hard: its hard to think of another legacy act so determined to play a part of the modern musical dialogue without losing their identity. If theyre not always successful, theres nevertheless something ingratiating about the ambition.
