Ray Charles
Allmusic Biography : Ray Charles was the musician most responsible for developing soul music. Singers like Sam Cooke and Jackie Wilson also did a great deal to pioneer the form, but Charles did even more to devise a new form of black pop by merging 50s R&B; with gospel-powered vocals, adding plenty of flavor from contemporary jazz, blues, and (in the 60s) country. Then there was his singing; his style was among the most emotional and easily identifiable of any 20th century performer, up there with the likes of Elvis and Billie Holiday. He was also a superb keyboard player, arranger, and bandleader. The brilliance of his 1950s and 60s work, however, cant obscure the fact that he made few classic tracks after the mid-60s, though he recorded often and performed until the year before his death.

Blind since the age of six (from glaucoma), Charles studied composition and learned many instruments at the St. Augustine School for the Deaf and the Blind. His parents had died by his early teens, and he worked as a musician in Florida for a while before using his savings to move to Seattle in 1947. By the late 40s, he was recording in a smooth pop/R&B; style derivative of Nat "King" Cole and Charles Brown. He got his first Top Ten R&B; hit with "Baby, Let Me Hold Your Hand" in 1951. Charles first recordings came in for their fair share of criticism, as they were much milder and less original than the classics that would follow, although theyre actually fairly enjoyable, showing strong hints of the skills that were to flower in a few years.

In the early 50s, Charles sound started to toughen as he toured with Lowell Fulson, went to New Orleans to work with Guitar Slim (playing piano on and arranging Slims huge R&B; hit, "The Things That I Used to Do"), and got a band together for R&B; star Ruth Brown. It was at Atlantic Records that Ray Charles truly found his voice, consolidating the gains of recent years and then some with "I Got a Woman," a number-two R&B; hit in 1955. This is the song most frequently singled out as his pivotal performance, on which Charles first truly let go with his unmistakable gospel-ish moan, backed by a tight, bouncy horn-driven arrangement.

Throughout the 50s, Charles ran off a series of R&B; hits that, although they werent called "soul" at the time, did a lot to pave the way for soul by presenting a form of R&B; that was sophisticated without sacrificing any emotional grit. "This Little Girl of Mine," "Drown in My Own Tears," "Hallelujah I Love Her So," "Lonely Avenue," and "The Right Time" were all big hits. But Charles didnt really capture the pop audience until "Whatd I Say," which caught the fervor of the church with its pleading vocals, as well as the spirit of rock & roll with its classic electric piano line. It was his first Top Ten pop hit, and one of his final Atlantic singles, as he left the label at the end of the 50s for ABC.

One of the chief attractions of the ABC deal for Charles was a much greater degree of artistic control of his recordings. He put it to good use on early-60s hits like "Unchain My Heart" and "Hit the Road Jack," which solidified his pop stardom with only a modicum of polish attached to the R&B; he had perfected at Atlantic. In 1962, he surprised the pop world by turning his attention to country & western music, topping the charts with the "I Cant Stop Loving You" single, and making a hugely popular album (in an era in which R&B;/soul LPs rarely scored high on the charts) with Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music. Perhaps it shouldnt have been so surprising; Charles had always been eclectic, recording quite a bit of straight jazz at Atlantic, with noted jazz musicians like David "Fathead" Newman and Milt Jackson.

Charles remained extremely popular through the mid-60s, scoring big hits like "Busted," "You Are My Sunshine," "Take These Chains From My Heart," and "Crying Time," although his momentum was slowed by a 1965 bust for heroin. This led to a year-long absence from performing, but he picked up where he left off with "Lets Go Get Stoned" in 1966. Yet by this time Charles was focusing increasingly less on rock and soul, in favor of pop tunes, often with string arrangements, that seemed aimed more at the easy listening audience than anyone else. Charles influence on the rock mainstream was as apparent as ever; Joe Cocker and Steve Winwood in particular owe a great deal of their style to him, and echoes of his phrasing can be heard more subtly in the work of greats like Van Morrison.

One approaches sweeping criticism of Charles with hesitation; he was an American institution, after all, and his vocal powers barely diminished over his half-century career. The fact remains, though, that his work after the late 60s on record was very disappointing. Millions of listeners yearned for a return to the all-out soul of his 1955-1965 classics, but Charles had actually never been committed to soul above all else. Like Aretha Franklin and Elvis Presley, his focus was more upon all-around pop than many realize; his love of jazz, country, and pop standards was evident, even if his more earthy offerings were the ones that truly broke ground and will stand the test of time. He dented the charts (sometimes the country ones) occasionally, and commanded devoted international concert audiences whenever he felt like it. For good or ill, he ensured his imprint upon the American mass consciousness in the 1990s by singing several ads for Diet Pepsi. He also recorded three albums during the 90s for Warner Bros., but remained most popular as a concert draw. In 2002, he released Thanks for Bringing Love Around Again on his own Crossover imprint, and the following year began recording an album of duets featuring B.B. King, Willie Nelson, Michael McDonald, and James Taylor. After hip replacement surgery in 2003, he scheduled a tour for the following summer, but was forced to cancel an appearance in March 2004. Three months later, on June 10, 2004, Ray Charles succumbed to liver disease at his home in Beverly Hills, CA. The duets album, Genius Loves Company, was released two months after his death. The biopic Ray hit screens in the fall of 2010 and was a critical and commercial success, with the actor who portrayed Charles in the move, Jamie Foxx, winning the 2005 Academy Award for Best Actor for his role. Two more posthumous albums, Genius & Friends and Ray Sings, Basie Swings, appeared in 2005 and 2006 respectively. Charles recordings began reappearing in various facsimile editions, reissues, re-masters, and box sets as his entire recorded legacy received the attention that befits a legendary American artist.

The Great Ray Charles : Allmusic album Review : This set is rather unusual, for it is strictly instrumental, allowing Ray Charles a rare opportunity to be a jazz-oriented pianist. Two selections are with a trio (bassist Oscar Pettiford joins Charles on "Black Coffee"), while the other six are with a septet taken from his big band of the period. Key among the sidemen are David Newman (soloing on both tenor and alto) and trumpeter Joseph Bridgewater; highlights include Quincy Jones "The Ray," "My Melancholy Baby," "Doodlin," and "Undecided." Ray Charles should have recorded in this setting more often in his later years.

The Genius of Ray Charles : Allmusic album Review : Some players from Ray Charles big band are joined by many ringers from the Count Basie and Duke Ellington bands for the first half of this program, featuring Charles belting out six songs arranged by Quincy Jones. "Let the Good Times Roll" and "Deed I Do" are highlights, and there are solos by tenorman David "Fathead" Newman, trumpeter Marcus Belgrave, and (on "Two Years of Torture") tenor Paul Gonsalves. The remaining six numbers are ballads, with Charles backed by a string orchestra arranged by Ralph Burns (including "Come Rain or Come Shine" and "Dont Let the Sun Catch You Cryin"). Charles voice is heard throughout in peak form, giving soul to even the veteran standards.

The Genius Hits the Road : Allmusic album Review : In keeping with his jazz/pop crossover ambitions, Ray Charles decided to record a concept album of sorts with a dozen songs devoted to various parts of the U.S. -- "Alabamy Bound," "Georgia on My Mind," "Moonlight in Vermont," "California, Here I Come," "Blue Hawaii," and more. The crossover vibe is further heightened by the brassy big-band arrangements, and material from the likes of Al Jolson and Hoagy Carmichael. It sounds a bit corny now, with an in-your-face gung-ho cheer. But it did what Charles wanted it to do, reaching the Top Ten of the album charts, and spinning off a big hit with "Georgia on My Mind." Genius + Soul = Jazz : Allmusic album Review : One of the best early-60s examples of soul-jazz crossover, this record, like several of his dates from the period, featured big-band arrangements (played by the Count Basie band). This fared better than some of Charles similar outings, however, if only because it muted some of his straight pop aspirations in favor of some pretty mean and lean, cut-to-the-heart-of-the-matter B-3 Hammond organ licks. Most of the album is instrumental and swings vivaciously, although Charles does take a couple of vocals with "Im Gonna Move to the Outskirts of Town" and "Ive Got News for You." Yet one of those instrumentals, a cover of the Clovers "One Mint Julep," would give Charles one of his most unpredictable (and best) early-60s hits.

The Genius After Hours : Allmusic album Review : Taken from the same three sessions as The Great Ray Charles but not duplicating any of the performances, this set casts Charles as a jazz-oriented pianist in an instrumental setting. Brother Charles has five numbers with a trio (three songs have Oscar Pettiford on bass) and jams on three other tunes ("Hornful Soul," "Aint Misbehavin," and "Joy Ride") with a septet arranged by Quincy Jones; solo space is given to David "Fathead" Newman on tenor and alto and trumpeter Joseph Bridgewater. Fine music -- definitely a change of pace for Ray Charles.

Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music : Allmusic album Review : When Ray Charles made Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music in 1962, he was operating from a position of power. Two years into his contract with ABC-Paramount, he had already become a fixture in the Top Ten with both his singles and his albums, winning a Grammy for his 1960 single "Georgia on My Mind." Charles had freedom to do whatever he wanted, and he chose to record interpretations of 12 country songs, drawing almost equally from recent hits and older standards. The sly virtuosity within Charles approach was to treat these tunes as a a songbook to be reinvented, not as songs that were tied to their rural roots. Later, Charles explained that he saw little difference between a country tune and a blues song -- they draw from the same emotions and musical traditions -- but the striking thing about his interpretations on Modern Sounds in Country and Western is that hes not concentrating on the earthier elements of either genre. Hes fully focused on playing these songs as hed play any other, grounding them in jazz and soul, then dressing them in arrangements designed to snag a crossover audience. To latter-day generations, those arrangements -- thick with strings and backing vocals -- may sound slightly schlocky, yet even in 1962 they were a sign of how Charles was as intent on appealing to a mainstream easy listening demographic as he was to his soul and jazz audience. Thats the brilliance of the project: it is thoroughly American pop music, blending seemingly disparate elements in a fashion that seems simultaneously universal and idiosyncratic.

Audiences quickly embraced Modern Sounds in Country Music, which lead Charles and producer Sid Feller to record a sequel immediately, rushing it onto the marketplace of October 1962, just six months after the first hit the stars. Time has eroded the differences between the two LPs, and perhaps inevitably so: the two share the same sensibility and arrangers, with the difference being the second volume separates the big band tunes on one side, with the strings and choirs on the other. Its a notable distinction, but the main difference between the two albums is that the first volume retains a sense of discovery, whereas the second is made with the confidence that this particular formula works. In either case, the two albums -- whether heard individually or as a pair, as they so often are -- arent so much complements but of a piece, music that changed the course of popular music and remains a testament to the genius of Ray Charles.

Ingredients in a Recipe for Soul : Allmusic album Review : Although it was a big commercial success, reaching number two on the LP charts, this record would typify the erratic nature of much of Charles 60s output. Its too eclectic for its own good, really, encompassing pop standards, lowdown blues, Mel Tormé songs, and after-hours ballads. The high points are very high -- "Busted," his hit reworking of a composition by country songwriter Harlan Howard, is jazzy and tough, and one of his best early-60s singles, and the low points are pretty low, especially when he adds the backup vocals of the Jack Halloran Singers to "Over the Rainbow" and "Ol Man River." A number of the remaining cuts are pretty respectable, like the tight big band arrangement of "Ol Man Time" and the ominously urbane "Where Can I Go?

Sweet & Sour Tears : Allmusic album Review : One of a series of ultra-loose concept albums Ray Charles cut in the 60s, this one is dedicated entirely to songs with titles or lyrical references to crying and tears. Its an excuse for Charles to choose his usual varied menu of upbeat jumpers, slow countrified weepers, and proudly saccharine pop standards. The production, as one might fear, also tends to the lachrymose side on the slow tunes, with the thick strings and backup vocals straight out of TV variety shows. One is almost tempted to think that Charles was toying with audience expectations by mixing unabashedly sentimental slow tunes with the far more bluesy, satisfying, and upbeat numbers, such as "Dont Cry, Baby" and "Baby, Dont You Cry," as well as his surprisingly brassy, punchy treatment of "Cry Me a River." These outings have always played much better with critics than the gloppy pop tunes, and for good reason -- they are much better.

Volcanic Action of My Soul : Allmusic album Review : Only Ray Charles and a select few could make a dirty blues like "Feel So Bad" soulful against the backdrop of an orchestra and a lavish arrangement. But he does just that throughout this 1971 release that comes with a poem by Julian Bond, credited here as the Bishop of Atlanta. The larder of mostly remakes includes "Wichita Lineman," "Something," "The Long and Winding Road," and a bluesy "What Am I Living For." Charles works his magic; but after listening to his gritty vocals on these slick charts, youll be longing for a previously unreleased Ray Charles in Muscle Shoals session (if there ever was one) to be uncovered in a vault.

A Message From the People : Allmusic album Review : Ray Charless time on ABC Records was about more than adding strings, choirs, and country tunes to his approach. By 1972s A MESSAGE FROM THE PEOPLE, he was turning out tracks full of funky soul, largely devoid of the overproduction plaguing much of his ABC discography. As was so often the case with Ray, a gospel feel mixed with R&B; locomotion is the engine that drives things here, but he also uses it to transform Melanies "What Have They Done to My Song, Ma" into a syncopated strut, and bring a Sunday Baptist church feel to the Dion hit "Abraham, Martin and John."

True to Life : Allmusic album Review : True to Life presents a classic case about the problem with two-sided music media. Side one is terrific -- great songs, shining horn charts and Ray Charles most consistent singing in years. The covers of Johnny Nashs "I Can See Clearly Now" and Joe Cockers "The Jealous Kind" are stellar. Charles then breathes life into two old chestnuts: "Oh What a Beautiful Mornin" and the Gershwins "How Long Has This Been Going On." Unfortunately, side two has absolutely nothing to recommend it. "Be My Love" suffers from a dull, drawn-out big band arrangement while the next three numbers attempt, and ultimately fail, to inject some soul funkiness into the proceedings. "Let It Be" joins "Eleanor Rigby" in the class of Charles forgettable Beatles covers. Conclusion: half a great Ray Charles record is better than none.

The Spirit of Christmas : Allmusic album Review : Recorded in 1985, The Spirit of Christmas finds Ray Charles performing a variety of holiday favorites with vocal assistance from the Raelettes and an appearance by jazz trumpeter Freddie Hubbard. The ten tracks mix standards and originals, including "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town," "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer," and the ballad "That Spirit of Christmas," which was featured in the movie National Lampoons Christmas Vacation. The Spirit of Christmas is perfect background music for any holiday celebration.

The material is perfect for the performers, and they give it an effective, if unstudied, treatment.

My World : Allmusic album Review : My World marked an attempt to somewhat "modernize" Ray Charles by incorporating elements of hip-hop and New Jack swing into his trademark sound. As a result, the record has aged poorly; the highlights are the songs done in Charles usual inimitable style, including a reading of Leon Russells "A Song for You" and a soulful rendition of Paul Simons "Still Crazy After All These Years."

Friendship : Allmusic album Review : In the liner notes to Columbia/Legacys 2005 reissue of Ray Charles 1984 album Friendship Gregg Geller calls the record "the crowning achievement" of the phase of Rays career where he "would cater to current tastes and draw from contemporary sources." Thats an accurate assessment of the LP in two ways: first of all, Friendship was a big hit, really the last genuine hit when Charles was alive, reaching number one on the country charts, where it stayed for 70 weeks; second, it is the pinnacle of his 80s country-pop records, the one where Ray truly captured the sound of the era (as evidenced by its chart success), thanks in no small part to producer Billy Sherrill, who gave this the same clean, slick, punchy sound that he brought to many of the Columbia/Epic records he produced in the early 80s. Of course, that doesnt necessarily make Friendship a great record, or even a good one. The very things that made it a hit in 1984 make it very dated -- apart from a cut or two, such as the good-humored opener, "Two Old Cats Like Us," the songs are as generic as Nashville product comes, and the overly bright sound of the album may have made it slip easily onto the charts in 1984, but has lost whatever charm it had over the years. Nevertheless, this is a record made by old pros, so its never bad. At its best -- meaning when there is some real interaction between Ray and his guests, as there is with Hank Williams, Jr. (the aforementioned "Two Old Cats Like Us"), the Oak Ridge Boys ("This Old Heart [Is Gonna Rise Again]"), and George Jones ("We Didnt See a Thing") -- its merely pleasant; at its worst, its simply dull, and duets between Ray and such greats as Merle Haggard, Johnny Cash, and Willie Nelson simply should not be dull, yet they are here and sound even duller with decades of hindsight. While Friendship is by no means embarrassing, its also not particularly interesting, and its more of a testament to the power of Sherrills Music City machine than it is to Charles greatness.

Genius Loves Company : Allmusic album Review : Genius Loves Company is the last studio album Ray Charles completed before his death in June 2004. Prior to this, the last studio album he released was Strong Love Affair in 1996, which was a stab at modern pop, filled with new songs and given an adult contemporary sheen. It was not one of his most distinctive efforts, even when judged against his latter-day albums, and it disappeared not long after its release. Charles left Warner and, years later, signed with Concord, who released Genius Loves Company, which had a decidedly different approach than the all-modern Strong Love Affair. As the title acknowledges with a wink, this is a duets album, which may be a little commonplace as far as latter-day superstar albums go but is still a step up from his previous studio album since it puts Ray Charles in a comfortable, relaxed situation that plays to his strengths. Instead of trying to put Charles in a modern setting, producers John Burk and Phil Ramone (Burk helmed seven of the albums tracks, Ramone is responsible for the other five, and their work fits together seamlessly) go for a clean retro setting with a few guitars, synths, and a rhythm section, occasionally dressing it with an orchestra or some strings. In other words, apart from the glistening production, its not far removed from any of Charles crossover records from the 60s, and hes also given a strong set of songs, largely familiar pop classics, from "Fever" and "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" to "Sorry Seems to Be the Hardest Word" and "Crazy Love." His duet partners are fairly predictable -- classy newcomers like Norah Jones and Diana Krall, but also old stalwarts like Elton John, B.B. King, Johnny Mathis, James Taylor, Bonnie Raitt, and the ubiquitous Willie Nelson (who has never sounded older than he does here on "It Was a Very Good Year") -- but theyre also reliable, never overshadowing Ray yet never shrinking in his shadow either; in short, it sounds more like a real duets album than most superstar duet records. The end result is modest, friendly, laid-back, and pleasing, one that remains faithful to Charles music while sounding relatively fresh. It may not be weighty enough to be a career-capping masterpiece, but its sweet enough to be an appropriate final album -- which is far more than can be said of Strong Love Affair, or any of the other albums he cut in the 80s or 90s for that matter.

Genius & Friends : Allmusic album Review : Atlantic/Rhinos 2005 Genius & Friends is the end result of a project Ray Charles initiated a few months before his death in June 2004. According to James Austins liner notes, Charles called Austin in December of 2003, asking if he could find the masters to an unreleased duets record Ray recorded in 1997 and 1998. Austin found the tapes, but Charles was too sick to work on them, so after his passing -- and after his final studio album, the duets record Genius Loves Company, became a number one hit in August of 2004 -- Atlantic/Rhino decided to finish off the project, bringing in producer Phil Ramone to oversee the completion of the album. This included bringing in singers to record their parts, since apart from two tracks -- a 1994 duet with Diana Ross on "Big Bad Love" and a live 1991 version of "Busted" with Willie Nelson (taken from the television special Ray Charles: 50 Years in Music) -- these are all studio constructions, with vocalists duetting with a previously recorded Ray. While not quite the monstrosity it could have been -- posthumous duets albums like this always bear an unsettling ghoulish undertow -- Genius & Friends is also not a particularly good album either. This isnt because the pairings are ill conceived -- apart from the woefully outmatched American Idol winner Ruben Studdard on "Imagine" (which boasts perhaps Rays best vocal performance on this record), theres nobody here who doesnt hold his or her own, and Ramone has skillfully edited the new recordings with the existing tapes so it sounds like they were recorded at the same time, even if it rarely sounds as if the vocalists were in the same room together. Rather, the problem is that the productions are caught halfway between 90s adult contemporary and modern neo-soul, sounding too slick and polished to really be memorable. Its pleasant enough -- and its top-loaded, too, with the duets with Angie Stone, Chris Isaak, and Mary J. Blige being among the best cuts -- but its not as relaxed or appealing as Genius Loves Company, which had the feeling of being a real duets album. This feels like what it is -- a professional studio creation. Not a terrible thing per se, but not something that makes for a good album, either.

Ray Sings, Basie Swings : Allmusic album Review : Ray Sings, Basie Swings, huh? Hmm, well, yes and no. You see, the story goes something like this. In 2005, Concord Records exec John Burk, who produced Ray Charles superb late-career, Grammy-winning Genius Loves Company, found a reel of tape simply labeled "Ray/Basie." Upon further analysis, it was determined that the 1973 recording featured Ray Charles backed by his own band -- Count Basie and his band had actually recorded earlier that day. Charles vocal was exceptionally prominent in the mix and at first it was thought that this potentially momentous discovery would prove unable to bear fruit. But then Burk brainstormed and decided to bring the current Count Basie Orchestra -- whose leader died in 1984 -- into the studio to lay tracks behind Charles vocals. So theres no Basie on Ray Sings, Basie Swings, but thats merely a technicality, because there is some great music. Charles was in fine form vocally on this mix of remakes of his early ABC-Paramount-era hits and then-recent material. The consecutive reworkings of "Busted," "Cryin Time," and "I Cant Stop Loving You," three of his defining Top Ten hits of the early 60s, are given brassy, bluesy treatments here, and standards ranging from Oscar Hammerstein IIs "Oh, What a Beautiful Morning" to the Beatles "The Long and Winding Road" are transformed in Charles hands. The set-closing "Georgia on My Mind," as close to a signature song as Charles had, is given a tender, minimalist reading, but the track preceding it, "Look What Theyve Done to My Song, Ma," picked up from the folk-pop singer Melanie, is quite possibly the albums highlight. Its appeared on other Ray Charles compilations before, but the gospelized, testifyin version featured here has got to be the liveliest take on that song anyones ever devised. So, yeah, theres no Count Basie to be found here, but his namesake orchestra does him proud. For one of those postmortem studio patch jobs that owes as much to technology as talent, its a fine addition to the Ray Charles oeuvre, as long as one can get past the semi-false advertising of its title.
